Privacy Policy

Playlane is a social cinema platform where films are shared in living rooms, rooftops and gardens with people who live nearby. When you sign up to host, you trust us with some personal details. This page explains, in plain language, what we collect, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have.

1Who we are

Playlane is a trading name of ALEXANDER PHI LTD, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 16439746), with its registered office at Cortland 306b, 3 Ryland Street, Birmingham, West Midlands, B15 1AW, United Kingdom. In this policy, “Playlane”, “we” and “us” mean that company.

We are the “controller” of your personal data under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018). If you have any questions, email us at helloneighbour@playlane.co.

2What we collect

When you sign up as a host, we collect the details you type into the form:

Your name, so we know what to call you.
Your email address, to confirm your sign-up and keep in touch.
Your phone number, so we can contact you about hosting and so you can join the hosts’ WhatsApp group.
Your city or neighbourhood, so we can match you with screenings and people nearby. We don’t ask for your street address.

When you visit the site, the companies that host it and serve its fonts automatically receive basic technical information, such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you request. This is a normal part of loading any website. We don’t use this information to identify you.

3How we use it

To register you as a Playlane host and send you a confirmation email.
To invite you to the hosts’ WhatsApp group.
To contact you about hosting: tips, planning your first screening and news about Playlane launching in your area.
To understand where hosts are, so we can plan where to launch next.
To keep the site secure and working properly.

We will never sell your personal data, and we don’t use it for advertising.

4Our legal reasons for using it

UK law says we need a valid reason (a “lawful basis”) to use your data:

Consent: you choose to fill in and submit the sign-up form so we can register you as a host and contact you about hosting. You can withdraw your consent at any time by emailing us. This won’t affect anything we did before you withdrew it.
Legitimate interests: keeping the site secure and running, and planning where to launch based on where hosts are. We only do this in ways you would reasonably expect.

5The hosts’ WhatsApp group

After you sign up, we give you an invite link to a WhatsApp group for Playlane hosts. Joining is optional.

Please note: if you join, your phone number, name and WhatsApp profile (such as your photo) will be visible to everyone else in the group. Other members are not Playlane staff and are not bound by this policy. Please only share what you’re comfortable with, and you can leave the group at any time.

WhatsApp is run by WhatsApp LLC (part of Meta), which handles your information under WhatsApp’s own privacy policy.

6Who we share it with

We use a small number of trusted service providers to run Playlane. They only process your data on our instructions, for the purposes in this policy:

We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of our hosts, guests or the public.

7Transfers outside the UK

Some of our providers are based in, or store data in, the United States. When your data is transferred outside the UK, we make sure appropriate safeguards are in place, such as the UK’s International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum, or the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework where the provider is certified.

8How long we keep it

We keep your details while you’re part of the Playlane host community. If you ask us to delete your data, we’ll do so within 30 days. If we haven’t heard from you for 2 years, we’ll delete your details.

9Your rights

Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:

Access the personal data we hold about you.
Correct anything that’s wrong or out of date.
Delete your data.
Object to or restrict how we use it.
Withdraw your consent at any time.
Receive a copy of your data in a portable format.

To use any of these rights, email helloneighbour@playlane.co. We’ll respond within one month. Every email we send also lets you reply to stop hearing from us.

If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your data, please talk to us first. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.

10Cookies

This website doesn’t use cookies, analytics or advertising trackers. If that changes, we’ll update this policy and ask for your permission where the law requires it.

11Age

You must be 18 or over to sign up as a Playlane host. We don’t knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If you believe someone under 18 has signed up, please contact us and we’ll delete their details.

12Keeping your data safe

We use reputable providers, encrypted connections (HTTPS) and restricted access to keep your data secure. Only the people at Playlane who need your details to run the host community can see them.

13Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We’ll change the “last updated” date at the top, and if the changes are significant, we’ll let you know by email.
